In 2016, police in Anaheim, California, received reports that Angela Diaz was being stalked and harassed. The evidence pointed to Michelle Hadley, who had previously dated Angela's husband, Ian Diaz, a former deputy US marshal. There were threatening emails, and Craigslist ads, written as if by Angela, that invited strangers to act out a "rape fantasy" at her home. Hadley was arrested, charged with stalking and harassment, and held in jail for 88 days.
She hadn't done any of it. Investigators eventually found that Ian and Angela had built the case themselves, through fake emails, online ads and calls to police, to make Hadley look like a dangerous stalker. Hadley was released and cleared. Angela was sentenced to five years in prison in 2017, and Ian to ten years in 2023.
What the documentary does well
The story is told mainly through interviews and real case material rather than reenactments, and the case itself carries it: every new piece of evidence first seems to confirm Hadley's guilt before falling apart. Reviewers praised its brisk pacing compared with the many true-crime releases stretched across several episodes.
Where it falls short
The biggest question the case raises is how a woman could be jailed for nearly three months on evidence that someone else had manufactured. The film spends less time on how the police handled the original investigation than that question deserves.
