The question nobody asks first: how long is this going to take?

With films the commitment is two hours. With series it can be anything from four hours to a hundred and fifty, and that number matters more than genre for whether you'll actually finish. A show you love and abandon at season three is a worse outcome than a decent show you finish.

So decide the shape before the subject:

Mini-series (3–8 episodes). A long film in instalments. Complete story, no risk of cancellation, finishable across a weekend.
One-and-done (a single season). Either designed that way or cancelled kindly. Low risk, and there are more good ones than people realise.
The long-runner. Worth it only if it has a real ending. Committing to eighty episodes of something that was cancelled mid-arc is how people stop trusting television.

Finished versus ongoing

This is the filter most tools ignore and most viewers care about. An ongoing show means waiting, and a cancelled-without-resolution show means the time was spent for nothing. If you want the guarantee of an ending, there's a list of series that actually finish.

Episode length is a real variable

A 30-minute episode and a 60-minute episode are different products. Half-hours are resumable — you can watch one on a weeknight without sacrificing the evening. Hour-longs need a runway, and stacking two of them is a three-hour commitment nobody plans for. If your viewing happens in fragments, filter for half-hours and your completion rate will roughly double.

The TV series quiz uses TMDB's /discover/tv endpoint with genre, era, score and provider filters. Each pick is a real show in TMDB's catalog with current season, episode count and streaming availability.
