Best Slow Burn Series Worth the Patience

TL;DR — Shows that start quietly and end up among TV's best: Better Call Saul, Halt and Catch Fire (it clicks in Season 2), The Leftovers (Season 2 onward), Rectify, The Americans and Mad Men. For mystery, Twin Peaks or Severance. Give each at least three or four episodes, and often a full season, before deciding.

The Bear, Fleabag, Halt and Catch Fire, Twin Peaks, and Chernobyl with patience-level ratings.
Some stories take their time. The payoff is worth it.

Character studies

Better Call Saul (AMC, 2015-2022, 6 seasons). Bob Odenkirk's Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer trying to go straight, slowly becomes the crooked Saul Goodman of Breaking Bad. Rhea Seehorn's Kim Wexler is one of TV's great characters.

Rectify (SundanceTV, 2013-2016, 4 seasons). Daniel Holden returns to his Georgia hometown after DNA evidence frees him from death row. Almost nothing happens fast, and every moment counts. One of the most underseen great dramas.

Mad Men (AMC, 2007-2015, 7 seasons). The ad men and women of Sterling Cooper through the 1960s. The pleasure is in small gestures and long arcs rather than plot twists.

Worth sticking with

Halt and Catch Fire (AMC, 2014-2017, 4 seasons). Season 1 is a fairly standard 1980s tech drama about cloning an IBM PC. From Season 2, when the focus shifts to Cameron and Donna's online gaming company, it becomes one of the best character dramas of the decade.

The Leftovers (HBO, 2014-2017, 3 seasons). Season 1 is relentlessly bleak; Seasons 2 and 3 are some of the most acclaimed in TV history, with a finale that lands quietly and perfectly.

The Americans (FX, 2013-2018, 6 seasons). Philip and Elizabeth Jennings are KGB officers raising children in 1980s Virginia. The spy plots are tense, but the real story is a marriage, and it builds to one of the best finales on TV.

Mysteries

Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990-1991; Showtime, 2017). FBI agent Dale Cooper investigates the murder of Laura Palmer in a small Washington town. The 2017 revival, The Return, is slower and stranger still, and divisive.

Severance (Apple TV, 2022 onward). Mark and his co-workers at Lumon have had their work memories split from their personal lives. The mystery unfolds deliberately, with every reveal earned.

Our verdict

Start with Better Call Saul. If you love it, Rectify and Halt and Catch Fire are the next best payoffs for your patience.

Frequently asked questions

How many episodes should I give a slow-burn show? At least three or four. For Halt and Catch Fire and The Leftovers, many fans say the full first season, as both improve sharply in Season 2.

Do I need to watch Breaking Bad before Better Call Saul? No, it's a prequel and works on its own, but some later moments land harder if you've seen Breaking Bad.
