Best Movies With Unreliable Narrators

TL;DR — The classic is Rashomon (1950). For twisty thrillers, The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Memento, Shutter Island and Gone Girl. For something darker, American Psycho. For heartbreak, Atonement. All spoiler-free below: knowing a film has an unreliable narrator is a hint, not a spoiler.

Fight Club, Shutter Island, The Usual Suspects, Black Swan, Gone Girl, and American Psycho.
You can't trust what you're being shown.

The classic

Rashomon (1950, dir. Akira Kurosawa, 88 minutes). A samurai's death in a forest is told by a bandit, the samurai's wife, the dead man through a medium, and a woodcutter, and their stories don't fit. So influential that "the Rashomon effect" became a term for conflicting accounts.

Thrillers

The Usual Suspects (1995, dir. Bryan Singer, 106 minutes). Kevin Spacey's Verbal Kint tells a customs agent how five criminals came together. Christopher McQuarrie's script won an Oscar.

Fight Club (1999, dir. David Fincher, 139 minutes). Edward Norton's nameless narrator and Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden start an underground club that grows into something else.

Memento (2000, dir. Christopher Nolan, 113 minutes). Leonard can't form new memories, so he relies on notes, photos and tattoos. The colour scenes run backwards, putting you in his position.

Shutter Island (2010, dir. Martin Scorsese, 138 minutes). Leonardo DiCaprio's US marshal investigates a missing patient at a hospital for the criminally insane in 1954, as a storm closes in.

Gone Girl (2014, dir. David Fincher, 149 minutes). Ben Affleck's Nick becomes the main suspect when his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears. Gillian Flynn adapted her own novel.

Darker and sadder

American Psycho (2000, dir. Mary Harron, 102 minutes). Christian Bale's Patrick Bateman narrates his routine of skincare, business cards and murder. A satire as much as a horror film.

Atonement (2007, dir. Joe Wright, 123 minutes). In 1935, 13-year-old Briony misreads what she sees and accuses an innocent man. The final scenes reframe everything before them.

Our verdict

Start with Memento for a puzzle, The Usual Suspects for a crowd-pleaser, or Rashomon to see where it all began.
