Agatha Christie's Poirot (ITV, 1989-2013, 13 series). David Suchet spent 24 years adapting every Poirot novel and nearly every short story. Early series are cosy, later feature-length films darker. The definitive Christie on screen.
Noir
Jessica Jones (Netflix, 2015-2019, 3 seasons). Krysten Ritter's sardonic PI, traumatised by David Tennant's mind-controlling Kilgrave. Season 1 is the standout and works on its own, even if you skip the rest of Marvel.
Bosch: Legacy (Freevee and Prime Video, 2022-2025, 3 seasons). Titus Welliver's Harry Bosch, now a PI, while his daughter Maddie becomes a cop. Methodical Los Angeles crime drama from Michael Connelly's books.
Teen and modern
Veronica Mars (UPN/The CW, 2004-2007; Hulu, 2019, 4 seasons). Kristen Bell as a high-school outcast who helps her PI father and investigates her best friend's murder. Season 1 is a near-perfect season-long mystery. A 2014 film sits between seasons 3 and 4.
Strike (BBC One, 2017 onward). Tom Burke as Cormoran Strike, an army veteran turned detective, and Holliday Grainger as his partner Robin Ellacott, adapting Robert Galbraith's novels. Shown in the US as C.B. Strike.
Fun
Magnum, P.I. (CBS, 1980-1988, 8 seasons). Tom Selleck as a former Navy SEAL living on a Hawaiian estate. Light, warm and surprisingly poignant about Vietnam. A reboot ran from 2018 to 2024.
Moonlighting (ABC, 1985-1989, 5 seasons). A broke model and a wisecracking detective run an agency together. Famous for its fast banter and fourth-wall breaking, and for making Bruce Willis a star.
Psych (USA Network, 2006-2014, 8 seasons). James Roday Rodriguez fakes psychic powers to consult for the police, with Dulé Hill as his long-suffering friend. Three follow-up films came later.
