Dragon Ball Watch Order: Z, GT, Super

In short: Watch Dragon Ball (153 episodes), Dragon Ball Z (291, or the shorter recut Dragon Ball Kai), Dragon Ball Daima (2024, 20 episodes), then Dragon Ball Super (131) and its films Broly and Super Hero. GT (64 episodes) is optional because Super replaced it as the official sequel. A remastered Super, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, premieres on October 11, 2026.

Dragon Ball watch order timeline showing Dragon Ball 1986, Z 1989 and GT 1996.
Five entries across four decades — GT is the one worth arguing about.

The watch order

  1. Dragon Ball (1986 to 1989, 153 episodes)
  2. Dragon Ball Z (1989 to 1996, 291 episodes), or Dragon Ball Z Kai, a recut that removes most filler
  3. Dragon Ball Daima (October 2024 to February 2025, 20 episodes): set shortly after the Buu saga
  4. Dragon Ball Super (2015 to 2018, 131 episodes)
  5. Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018 film) and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022 film)
  6. Dragon Ball GT (1996 to 1997, 64 episodes): optional, as an alternate future

The first two Super arcs retell the films Battle of Gods (2013) and Resurrection 'F' (2015), so you can watch either version.

The GT question

GT was made for TV after Toriyama's manga ended, without a story from him. Dragon Ball Super arrived in 2015 with Toriyama writing the outlines, and it covers the years after Buu differently. GT has fans and a memorable finale, but nothing later builds on it.

What's new

Akira Toriyama died in March 2024; Daima was his final anime project. Toyotaro continues the Dragon Ball Super manga. For the 40th anniversary, Toei announced Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a remastered Super with new animation and voice recording, premiering October 11, 2026 on Fuji TV (Crunchyroll simulcast; Netflix US from October 17). A new series adapting the manga's Galactic Patrol Prisoner (Moro) arc is in production, without a date.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dragon Ball GT canon? Not to the current story. GT was an anime-only sequel, and Super, built from Akira Toriyama's own outlines, now fills the same period with different events.

What is Dragon Ball Super: Beerus? A remastered, re-edited version of Dragon Ball Super with improved animation and new voice recordings. It premieres in Japan on October 11, 2026, with weekly episodes on Netflix in the US from October 17. A new Galactic Patrol (Moro arc) anime is also in production, with no date yet.
