Worth it for the style and the world. Gachiakuta looks like nothing else airing: graffiti-inspired designs, a junkyard wasteland and fights built around objects people have thrown away. Its story beats are familiar shonen, but the setting and its anger at how societies discard the poor give it a real identity.
The premise
Rudo lives among the outcasts of a wealthy floating city. When his adoptive father is murdered, Rudo is blamed and thrown into the Pit, the toxic dumping ground below. There he discovers he's a Giver, able to bring cherished objects to life as weapons, and joins the Cleaners, who fight monsters born from the trash.
What makes it work
- The look. Kei Urana's manga features graffiti art by Hideyoshi Andou, and the anime carries that street-art energy into its title cards and action.
- The idea. Powers come from objects people valued and threw away, a neat match for a story about people being thrown away.
- The music. Composer Taku Iwasaki, known for Bungo Stray Dogs and Soul Eater, gives the fights a big, eclectic score.
