TL;DR — Yes, if you can handle dark, emotionally punishing storytelling. Subaru's only power is 'Return by Death': when he dies, time rewinds, and he keeps the trauma. There are now four seasons, the latest of which aired April to September 2026, plus two optional OVA films. Start with Season 1 (either version) and stick with it past Subaru's early arrogance.

Worth it, and one of the best isekai. Most "transported to a fantasy world" shows hand their hero overwhelming power. Re:Zero gives Subaru nothing but the ability to die and try again, and treats each death as real trauma. It's frequently brutal, but that's what makes his victories land.
The premise
Shut-in Subaru Natsuki is suddenly transported to a fantasy kingdom on his way home from a convenience store. He meets Emilia, a half-elf candidate to rule the kingdom, and quickly discovers that whenever he dies he returns to an earlier checkpoint, memories intact. He can't tell anyone, and every attempt to fix things costs him.

- Memory Snow (OVA, 2018). A light side story set during Season 1. Optional.
- The Frozen Bond (OVA, 2019). Emilia's backstory, a prequel. Optional, but helps Season 2.

What people warn about
Subaru is irritating in the early episodes: loud, entitled and convinced he's the hero. That's deliberate, and his breakdown and recovery around episodes 15 to 18 are the turning point most fans cite. There's also graphic violence and psychological torment throughout.
Who it suits
If you liked Steins;Gate's time loops or Made in Abyss's darkness, Re:Zero is a must. If you want comfortable isekai, try Slime instead.

Should I watch Re:Zero's director's cut? Either works. The 2020 director's cut re-edits Season 1 into 13 hour-long episodes with some new footage. Newcomers often prefer the original 25 episodes for pacing.
