What actually happened to this movie back in 2023?

Warner Bros. Discovery shelved Coyote vs. Acme completely in November 2023, a full year after it had already finished filming, taking a roughly 30 million dollar tax write-off in the process. This wasn't a case of a troubled production getting quietly cancelled, the film was done, tested well with audiences, and reportedly cost around 70 to 72 million dollars to make. The decision sparked real backlash, both from fans and from people who'd actually worked on the production, who described being genuinely blindsided by the news that a finished film was simply being written off rather than released.

How did the movie actually get saved?

After Warner Bros. rejected several bids to buy the film outright as too low, it sat in limbo for over a year until March 2025, when independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment acquired the worldwide distribution rights for 50 million dollars. That's a genuine underdog story for a film about, fittingly enough, an underdog, Wile E. Coyote, taking on a corporation that keeps failing him. The film then premiered at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2025, drawing real fan excitement, before Ketchup locked in the August 28, 2026 theatrical release date.

What's the actual plot?

After years of ACME's defective products consistently backfiring on him in his pursuit of the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote hires a down on his luck human lawyer, Kevin Avery, to sue the ACME Corporation directly. When Kevin discovers his own intimidating boss at his old law firm is representing ACME in the case, the two form an unlikely alliance to take the company down. It's a live-action and animation hybrid format, similar in spirit to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, based partly on Ian Frazier's 1990 New Yorker piece "Coyote v. Acme," which imagined the cartoon character's grievances as an actual legal complaint.

Who's actually in it?

John Cena, Will Forte, Lana Condor, P.J. Byrne, and Tone Bell lead the human cast, with Eric Bauza voicing the classic Looney Tunes characters. Dave Green directs from a screenplay by Samy Burch, based on a story she wrote alongside James Gunn, who also produced, and Jeremy Slater.

Is the movie actually good, or is this just a feel-good comeback story?

Early reactions have genuinely been encouraging beyond just the underdog narrative around its release. Critics who've seen it have praised its energy and humor, along with a surprisingly emotional core to the underdog story itself, not just relying on nostalgia for the Looney Tunes characters. One particularly enthusiastic reaction even argued it surpasses both recent Space Jam films as a big screen Looney Tunes outing, which is a genuinely high bar given how mixed reception to those films has been over the years.

Why does this specific story matter beyond just one movie?

Because it's become something of a genuine case study in how studios have handled content library decisions during the streaming era. This wasn't the only Warner Bros. project affected by similar write-off decisions around the same period, and the backlash to Coyote vs. Acme specifically became a visible flashpoint in broader conversations about studios making finished, tested work simply disappear for tax purposes rather than releasing it. Getting an actual theatrical release after all that public pressure is a genuinely rare outcome for a shelved film.
