What it's about
Case (Callum Turner) was a brilliant hacker until an employer he stole from damaged his nervous system so he could never jack into cyberspace again. Living rough in Chiba City, Japan, he's offered a cure by the mysterious Armitage (Mark Strong), on one condition: a job. With Molly (Briana Middleton), a razor-nailed street samurai, he's pulled into a heist against the Tessier-Ashpool family and a powerful artificial intelligence.

Why the book matters
Neuromancer was Gibson's first novel and the first to win science fiction's three big prizes, the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards. It popularised the word "cyberspace" and set the template for cyberpunk: hackers, corporate power, body modification and rain-slicked neon cities. Its influence runs through The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk 2077. For decades it was considered hard to film because so much happens inside cyberspace and Case's head; previous film versions were announced but never made.
Should you read it first?
It isn't required, but it's around 270 pages and pays off. Expect to feel lost for the first few chapters: Gibson drops you into his slang without explanation, and it's part of the effect. If you like it, the Sprawl trilogy continues with Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).
Frequently asked questions
Should I read Neuromancer before watching? You don't need to, but it's a short novel and the series is a direct adaptation. Its slang and fast pace can be tough at first; most readers find it clicks after the first few chapters.
Will Apple adapt the rest of the Sprawl trilogy? Nothing has been announced. Neuromancer is followed by Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988), so there's source material if the series continues.
