The case
A member of a covert British special forces mission is shot dead near a remote Arctic research station on Svalbard. Amy and Kirsten have to work out what really happened in a place where British, Russian and Chinese interests, and a fight over natural resources, all overlap. As in the first two series, the murder is the way into a much bigger political story.

How it compares with the earlier series
Every series of Vigil puts its detectives somewhere sealed off and military. Series 1 (2021) was set on a Trident nuclear submarine and was one of the BBC's biggest drama launches in years. Series 2 (2023) followed an RAF drone programme and a fictional Gulf state. Series 3 trades the submarine's claustrophobia for open ice and isolation, and reviewers singled out the setting as the freshest thing about it.
Do you need to have watched series 1 and 2?
No. Each case is self-contained. The ongoing thread is Amy and Kirsten's relationship, which started in series 1, so watching that series first adds depth, but you won't be lost starting here.
