Film by film
The Curse of the Black Pearl. Gore Verbinski turned a theme-park ride into a witty, swashbuckling adventure, with Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will and Elizabeth and Geoffrey Rush as the cursed Captain Barbossa. Depp's loose, eccentric Jack Sparrow earned a Best Actor nomination. Works perfectly on its own.
Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. Filmed back to back as one story, with Bill Nighy's tentacled Davy Jones. Bigger, darker and much more complicated, with terrific effects and set pieces, though At World's End gets lost in its own plot. Watch them close together.
On Stranger Tides. Rob Marshall's film drops Will and Elizabeth for a standalone hunt for the Fountain of Youth, with Penélope Cruz and Ian McShane as Blackbeard. Lighter and smaller; reviews were mixed.
Dead Men Tell No Tales. Javier Bardem plays a vengeful ghost hunting Jack, with a new young pair and cameos tying back to the trilogy. The weakest-reviewed of the five.
What about a sixth film?
A new Pirates film has been in development for years, with several scripts and reported directions. In August 2026, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Deadline the team was "talking with Johnny" and working on a screenplay. Nothing is cast, scheduled or confirmed.

Watch the first film for sure, the next two if you're hooked, and the last two only if you want more Jack Sparrow.
