Worth it, and a great classic to start with. Yu Yu Hakusho mixes comedy, big fights and real feeling, and at 112 episodes with almost no filler it's far easier to finish than most shonen of its era. The animation is early-1990s, but the character designs and fights have aged well.
The premise
Yusuke Urameshi, a 14-year-old street fighter nobody respects, dies pushing a child out of the way of a car. The afterlife wasn't expecting him, so he's offered a way back: pass a test, then work as a Spirit Detective, hunting demons in the human world. He's joined by his loyal rival Kuwabara and two demons with their own agendas, Kurama and Hiei.
Arc by arc
- Spirit Detective (roughly 1 to 25). Short cases and Yusuke's training with the tough old psychic Genkai.
- Four Saint Beasts and Dark Tournament (roughly 26 to 66). After a short mission into a demon fortress, the team is forced into a demon tournament, culminating in the fight against the Younger Toguro. Widely ranked among anime's best tournament arcs.
- Chapter Black (67 to 94). A former Spirit Detective, Sensui, plans to open a tunnel to the demon world. Darker and more thoughtful.
- Three Kings (95 to 112). Yusuke learns about his demon ancestry. Togashi was exhausted by the time he wrote it, and the ending feels hurried.
The live-action version
Netflix's 2023 adaptation, with Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke, squeezes the early arcs into five episodes. Fans praised the fights and effects; the story is heavily condensed. Watch it after the anime, or as a taster if you're unsure.
Who it suits
If you like Hunter x Hunter, Togashi's later series, or classic Dragon Ball, this is essential. If you need modern animation, try the first ten episodes before deciding.
