Why is isekai anime so popular?

In short: Isekai, stories where someone is transported or reborn into another world, became one of anime's biggest genres in the 2010s because web novels made them cheap to find and test, the premise is instantly understandable, and it offers wish fulfilment with a built-in game logic. The best ones, like Re:Zero and KonoSuba, use the formula to say something new.

What isekai is

Isekai means "another world." A character, usually an ordinary person from modern Japan, is transported, summoned or reborn into a fantasy realm, often with special powers or knowledge. The idea is old: Aura Battler Dunbine (1983) and The Vision of Escaflowne (1996) used it decades ago.

Why it exploded

  • The web-novel pipeline. Sites like Shōsetsuka ni Narō let anyone publish serial fiction. Popular stories got light-novel deals, then manga and anime, so publishers could adapt stories with proven readers.
  • An instant premise. "Ordinary person, fantasy world" needs no explanation, which makes it easy to pitch and easy to start watching.
  • Game logic. Levels, skills and status screens borrow from RPGs that audiences already know.
  • Wish fulfilment. A second chance at life, often with power, appeals to stressed students and workers.
  • Sword Art Online. Its 2012 success showed how big the audience was.

Why it gets mocked

Sheer volume. Many seasons bring several near-identical shows with overpowered heroes and long, list-like titles. But the format also produces some of the most inventive anime around.

Isekai worth watching

  • Re:Zero: a hero whose only power is dying and starting again. Dark and gripping.
  • KonoSuba: a parody of the whole genre, and very funny.
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: cosy nation-building.
  • The Saga of Tanya the Evil: a ruthless salaryman reborn as a child soldier.
  • Mushoku Tensei: a whole life lived in a detailed world, with a divisive lead.
