Crime and investigation

Zodiac (2007, dir. David Fincher, 157 minutes). A cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), a reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) and a detective (Mark Ruffalo) spend years chasing the Zodiac Killer, who terrorised San Francisco in the late 1960s. It's about obsession and paperwork more than murder, and its basement scene is one of the tensest of the century.

Memories of Murder (2003, dir. Bong Joon-ho, 132 minutes). Two mismatched detectives investigate a string of murders in 1980s rural South Korea, based on the Hwaseong serial murders. The real killer was finally identified in 2019, which makes the famous final shot even more haunting.

Prisoners (2013, dir. Denis Villeneuve, 153 minutes). When two girls go missing on Thanksgiving, one father (Hugh Jackman) takes the law into his own hands while a detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) works the case. Grim, gripping and morally knotty.

Horror

Hereditary (2018, dir. Ari Aster, 127 minutes). After her mother's death, Annie (Toni Collette) and her family begin to unravel. The first half plays as a grief drama, which is why the second half hits so hard.

The Witch (2015, dir. Robert Eggers, 92 minutes). Banished from their plantation, a Puritan family settles beside a forest, and their baby disappears. Written in period English and lit by candle and daylight. Anya Taylor-Joy's breakthrough.

Character drama

There Will Be Blood (2007, dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, 158 minutes). Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the Oscar) builds an oil empire in early 1900s California and loses whatever humanity he had. The first 15 minutes have almost no dialogue.

Romance

In the Mood for Love (2000, dir. Wong Kar-wai, 98 minutes). Two neighbours (Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung) discover their spouses are having an affair, and slowly fall for each other while refusing to act on it. Every frame is beautiful.

Brief Encounter (1945, dir. David Lean, 86 minutes). A married woman meets a doctor in a railway station café, and they meet every Thursday after. Rachmaninoff on the soundtrack and enormous feeling held behind very British restraint.

How to watch a slow burn

Watch without your phone, in one sitting, ideally with the lights down. These films build on small details, and the payoffs land only if you caught the setup.
