Why Tokyo Drift is out of place
Tokyo Drift was made as a near-standalone sequel with a new lead, Sean Boswell (Lucas Black), and introduced Han (Sung Kang), who dies in a car crash near the end. Han proved so popular that director Justin Lin brought him back for the next three films, set earlier. The mid-credits scene of Fast & Furious 6 then replayed Han's crash from Tokyo Drift and revealed it was no accident: Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) caused it. That places Tokyo Drift after Fast & Furious 6 and leads straight into Furious 7. F9 later reveals that Han survived.
Release order or story order?
Release order, for a first watch. The Fast & Furious 6 reveal only works if you've already seen Han die, and the series' shift from street racing to globe-trotting heists makes more sense watched as it happened. Story order is a fun rewatch once you know the twists.
Where Hobbs & Shaw fits
Anywhere after The Fate of the Furious. It's a self-contained spinoff with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and the main films don't depend on it.
What's next: Fast Forever
Fast X (2023) was the first half of a planned two-part finale and ends on a cliffhanger. The second part, retitled Fast Forever, is scheduled for 2028, after a long delay. Fast X cost a reported $340 million or more and earned about $714 million worldwide, below earlier entries, and reports have described tension over the finale's budget. Vin Diesel has said the last film will return the series to street racing in Los Angeles.

If you only watch a few, make it the original, Fast Five and Furious 7: the start, the reinvention and the farewell to Paul Walker. Watch the whole run in release order and save the story order for a rewatch.
