Hitori Gotoh has practised guitar for hours a day since middle school and is secretly a popular cover guitarist online, but she's so anxious she can barely speak to anyone. Drummer Nijika Ijichi finds her sitting alone in a park with her guitar and drafts her into Kessoku Band as an emergency replacement. With deadpan bassist Ryo Yamada and, later, the bubbly Ikuyo Kita on vocals, Bocchi ("loner") has to survive rehearsals, part-time work and live shows, one panic attack at a time.
Why the comedy works
Director Keiichirō Saitō's team animates Bocchi's anxiety in wildly inventive ways: she melts into a puddle, glitches into pixels, or the show cuts away to live-action footage. The jokes are about how her mind exaggerates things, not about mocking her, and her small wins, a conversation, a sale, a solo, land with real weight. Anyone who has rehearsed a phone call in their head will recognise a lot of it.
The music
Kessoku Band's songs were written and recorded as a real indie-rock album, released in December 2022, and it became a hit in Japan in its own right. The live performances in episodes 8 and 12 are the show's high points. If you enjoy them, the album is worth a listen on its own.

Our verdict
One of the best anime comedies of the 2020s, and short enough to finish in a weekend. If you liked K-On! or Komi Can't Communicate, start tonight. If you want lots of plot, this is a character comedy first and a music story second.
