The Promised Neverland: Is It Worth Watching in 2026?

Our verdict — 8/10, worth watching

TL;DR — Watch Season 1 (CloverWorks, 2019, 12 episodes): a near-perfect escape thriller about orphans who discover the truth about their idyllic home. Then skip Season 2 (2021, 11 episodes), which cut most of the manga's remaining story, and read the manga from chapter 38 instead.

Yes — but mostly for Season 1.

The verdict

Season 1: absolutely. Season 2: skip it. The first season is a tight 12-episode game of strategy and suspense. The second is one of the most criticised adaptations of recent years, so the best path is to switch to the manga.

The premise

Emma, Norman and Ray are the brightest children at Grace Field House, a loving orphanage run by their "Mom," Isabella. They have never been allowed past the gate. When one night they discover what really happens to the children who are "adopted," the three start planning an escape for everyone, without letting Mom know they know.

What went wrong with Season 2

The manga continues for 20 volumes after the escape, with major arcs including the Goldy Pond hunting ground. Season 2 skipped or rewrote most of it, introduced changes manga readers disliked, and compressed the ending into a slideshow-style epilogue. Creator Kaiu Shirai worked on the anime, but the result still disappointed most fans.

What to do instead

After Season 1, pick up the manga at chapter 38. The art by Posuka Demizu is beautiful, and the story continues with the same intelligence as the first season.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start the manga after Season 1? Chapter 38, near the start of volume 5. Season 1 adapts roughly the first 37 chapters.

Is The Promised Neverland horror? It's a psychological thriller with horror elements. There's little gore on screen, but the premise and tension are disturbing.
