Worth it, and short enough to finish in a weekend. Death Parade's games are a clever device for exposing people under pressure, and its question, whether a stranger can fairly judge someone's whole life in one evening, gets deeper as it goes. The famously upbeat opening song is a deliberate contrast with the show itself.
The premise
When people die, some arrive in pairs at Quindecim, a bar run by the white-haired, emotionless bartender Decim. They don't remember dying. He has them play a game with their lives at stake, and their behaviour decides whether their souls are reincarnated or cast into the void. Then a mysterious black-haired woman starts assisting him, and her questions change how he sees his job.
Origins
Director Yuzuru Tachikawa first made Death Billiards, a short film for Japan's Anime Mirai young-animator project in 2013. Madhouse expanded the idea into the series two years later. Tachikawa went on to direct Mob Psycho 100 and Blue Lock.
Who it suits
If you liked Black Mirror, The Good Place or Kino's Journey, Death Parade's mix of moral puzzles and short stories will appeal. If you want a big ongoing plot, the episodic first half may feel slow.
