Worth it if you enjoy a protagonist you're not meant to like. Tanya mixes war horror, military strategy and pitch-black comedy. Some viewers love the clash of tones; others find it jarring. Aoi Yūki's performance, switching from childlike to terrifying in a breath, carries it either way.
The premise
A cold, rational Japanese salaryman is pushed in front of a train by a man he just fired. Before he dies, a god-like being he calls Being X, angry at his lack of faith, reincarnates him as an orphan girl in a world much like early-20th-century Europe, at war and full of magic. Tanya Degurechaff joins the army, planning a safe desk job. Instead, her talent and ruthlessness keep sending her to the front.

- Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie (2019). Continues directly from Season 1 as the Federation enters the war. Essential.
- Season 2 (July 8 to September 23, 2026, 12 episodes). Tanya leads a combined-arms unit on the eastern front against the Federation as the Empire's leaders lose touch with what's happening on the ground.
There are also short "Isekai Quartet" crossover appearances and a bonus episode; neither is needed.
Who it suits
If you liked Overlord's villain-as-hero setup or the war strategy of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, try it. If you want a conventional isekai with a kind lead, this is the opposite.
