Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku: Is It Worth Watching in 2026?

Item: Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku
Rating: 7.8

Our verdict — 7.8/10, worth watching

In short: Yes, especially if you're tired of high-school romance. Wotakoi (A-1 Pictures, 2018) is 11 short episodes about two adult office workers and childhood friends, Narumi and Hirotaka, who date partly because they don't have to hide their geeky hobbies from each other. Light, funny and very relatable; the manga covers far more of their relationship.

Wotakoi cover art of Narumi checking her phone at her office desk while coworkers look on. — Wotakoi's real distinction is being a romance about adults with jobs, rent, and long-buried social anxiety about their own hobbies.

The verdict

Worth it for a light, grown-up romance. Wotakoi is about adults with jobs, colleagues and hobbies, and its comedy comes from recognisable moments: hiding your fandom at work, gaming dates and arguing over which manga is better. Low stakes, high charm.

The premise

Narumi Momose, a fujoshi who hides her hobbies after a bad breakup, starts a new office job and finds her childhood friend Hirotaka Nifuji, a deadpan, hardcore gamer, working there. He suggests they date, since they'd never have to pretend around each other. Their co-workers Hanako and Kabakura, a bickering otaku couple, steal plenty of scenes.

What to know

It's short. 11 episodes, each about 22 minutes.
It's episodic. Built from short comic vignettes rather than a big plot.
It doesn't finish their story. Fujita's manga, completed in 11 volumes in 2021, goes much further.

Who it suits

If you liked My Dress-Up Darling, Horimiya or anything about fan culture, start here. If you want dramatic romance, Toradora! is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Wotakoi Season 2? No second TV season was made. Fujita's manga, which ended in 2021, continues and completes the story.

Do I need to be an otaku to enjoy Wotakoi? No. The jokes reference gaming, manga and fandom, but the core is a sweet, low-drama adult relationship.
