Worth it for a calm, warm romance. A Sign of Affection skips the love triangles and misunderstandings that drive most romance anime. Its tension is quieter: two people learning how to communicate, and Yuki's world getting bigger as she does.
The premise
Yuki Itose is a cheerful university student who was born deaf. When Itsuomi Nagi, a multilingual friend of a friend who loves to travel, helps her on a train, she's drawn to how unbothered he is by communicating differently. He starts learning sign language, and a slow, sweet relationship begins.
What makes it work
- Communication as the story. Signing, texting, lip-reading and silence are all shown thoughtfully, including how sound feels absent from Yuki's point of view.
