The verdict

Worth it for world-building fans. Log Horizon asks what would really happen if thousands of gamers were stuck in their game: who runs things, how the economy works, and how they treat the game's characters once they realise those characters are people. Season 1 is the strongest.

The premise

After an expansion update, about 30,000 Japanese players of the MMO Elder Tale wake up inside it. Death just sends you back to the cathedral, so there's no survival race, only chaos. Shiroe, a quiet, bespectacled strategist, forms the guild Log Horizon with his friends and sets out to give the city of Akiba a government.

Season by season

Season 1 (Satelight, 2013-2014, 25 episodes). The Round Table Alliance forms and contact with the People of the Land begins.
Season 2 (Studio Deen, 2014-2015, 25 episodes). A raid, a new threat and more politics. The animation dips with the studio change.
Season 3: Destruction of the Round Table (Studio Deen, 2021, 12 episodes). Shorter and denser, and ends mid-arc.
