Watch Season 1; then decide between Season 2 and the webtoon. The first 13 episodes are a confident, atmospheric introduction with a gut-punch ending. Season 2 continues the story but is uneven, and after 39 episodes you're still early in a very long webtoon. If you get hooked, reading is the reliable way to keep going.
The premise
Twenty-Fifth Bam has lived alone in darkness with only one friend, Rachel. When she enters the Tower, a vast structure where those who reach the top are said to get anything they want, Bam follows her. Each floor sets a test, and he teams up with the scheming Khun Aguero Agnis and the giant warrior Rak Wraithraiser to climb.
Season by season
- Season 1 (April to June 2020, 13 episodes). Telecom Animation Film, directed by Takashi Sano, with music by Kevin Penkin and an opening by Stray Kids. Covers the first arc of the webtoon. A Crunchyroll Original.
- Season 2 (July to December 2024, 26 episodes in two parts, Return of the Prince and Workshop Battle). A new studio, The Answer Studio, and a jump forward in time, introducing a mysterious new lead, Viole. Kevin Penkin returned for the music. Many fans felt the animation and pacing fell short of Season 1, especially in the dense Workshop Battle arc.
The webtoon
SIU's Tower of God has run on Naver Webtoon since 2010 and is one of the most popular Korean webtoons in the world, with an English version on the Webtoon app. The anime has adapted only the early part of it. If you finish Season 1 and want more, many fans recommend starting the webtoon from chapter 1, since it adds detail the anime cut.
Who it suits
If you liked Hunter x Hunter's exams or Made in Abyss's mysterious descent, Tower of God's floor-by-floor tests will appeal. If you need a finished story, look elsewhere for now.
