Demon Slayer Watch Order Explained

In short: Watch Demon Slayer in this order: Season 1, the Mugen Train film, the Entertainment District Arc, the Swordsmith Village Arc, the Hashira Training Arc, then Infinity Castle Part 1. Mugen Train is essential, not a side story. If you've seen the film, skip the first seven episodes of Season 2, which retell it. Infinity Castle Part 2 isn't expected before 2027.

Four TV seasons and the films, in the right order.

The watch order

  1. Season 1 (2019): 26 episodes. Tanjiro Kamado's family is slaughtered by a demon, and his sister Nezuko is turned into one. He trains and joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a cure.
  2. Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (film, 2020): about two hours. Tanjiro and his friends join the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, on a train where people keep disappearing.
  3. Season 2 (2021-2022): 18 episodes. Episodes 1 to 7 are the Mugen Train Arc, a TV retelling of the film with one new opening episode. Episodes 8 to 18 are the Entertainment District Arc.
  4. Season 3 (2023): 11 episodes. The Swordsmith Village Arc.
  5. Season 4 (2024): 8 episodes. The Hashira Training Arc.
  6. Infinity Castle Part 1 (film, 2025): in Japanese cinemas from July 18, 2025, and US cinemas from September 12. It begins the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji.

What you can skip

Season 2, episodes 1 to 7, if you've seen the film. They retell Mugen Train for TV. The one genuinely new episode, the first, follows Rengoku before he boards the train. It's a nice extra but not essential.

Nothing else. Mugen Train is the main story, not a side film, and the Hashira Training Arc is new material from the manga, not filler. Skipping either leaves a gap the next part assumes you've filled.

How long it takes

Watching the TV episodes with the film in place of Season 2's retelling, you're looking at 56 episodes plus two films, roughly 27 hours. Season 1 alone is about 10 hours.

Where the films stand

The manga's final arc is being adapted as a trilogy of films instead of a TV season. Infinity Castle Part 1 has grossed about $779 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film ever. Part 2 has no release date and isn't expected before 2027. The gap reflects how long these films take to make: the first took around three and a half years.

Is Demon Slayer a good first anime?

Yes. It has a clear goal from the first episode, the animation by studio ufotable is consistently striking, and at 23 manga volumes the story is short by shonen standards. It isn't gentle, though. Expect gore and some genuinely sad backstories for its demons.

More anime watch orders: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Chainsaw Man and Baki.
